Flashback Fridays: My "Pretty Woman" Moment

1581884212_57276dd550_o
Today I am reposting an old post I did in December of 2008. Scary Mommy has started Flashback Fridays where you rerun an old post or show off an older picture. Also if you do it today, there is a giveaway attached!! So here we go, back to 12/11/08.

Last night , I was flipping channels and "Pretty Woman" was on the tele. It was at the part where Vivian is telling Mr Thompson, the hotel manager, that she had all this money and no one would help her buy a dress. All of a sudden, I had all these college emotions and I had to finish watching the movie.

I am painfully aware, I am a far cry from Julia Roberts. But, how many of us girls had that "Pretty Women" moment when you were walking and you just felt so much like Vivian did in her red dress. I did. It was the Spring Formal of 1991 at MSU. My friends would run down to my boyfriend's room and tell him,"Oh my gosh, Vickie looks so pretty!" When Numbnuts did finally see me, his eyes were wide open. I knew then, I was no dog. As we were walking down the hallway, people would come out of their room and watch, just like in the movie when the couple were leaving the lobby. For someone who felt and was an ugly duckiling in high school, this was my moment, I was shining.

As I look at these old pictures, I wince. I am no longer 20 years old. That was also 60 pounds ago. I had a chin that was not melting into my neck. This dress forced a waistline and made my boobs smaller. I loved this dress!! My hair is kind of high, but at least it was full. Now it is thin and I am losing it on top. Yup, female pattern baldness:)

The reason for the sticker on Numbnut's face, he does not deserve to grace my blog. In a couple of years he would dump me for another chick and I would be humilated for almost a year. The name Jessica still send knives into my back and into my stomach. For she actually went after him and I lost him. We were not married, but we were dating and even talking possible marriage. BIT**!

But, I have come to realize that this was actually a blessing. For if Numbnuts, did not dump me, I would have never met my prince charming. For Numbnuts may have given me my "Pretty Woman" moment, Jason gave me my "Cinderella/Princess" moment.

Mary Elizabeth Schuring, if you are out there, I miss you!!

oh, come one, you're still a pretty woman! Personally, I wouldn't want to go back to 20....and I've NEVER been a pretty woman! By the way, numbnuts...too funny...

I'm a Scarlet Ohara woman myself, so I've always had an over inflated sense of self worth...

anyway.. your post reminds me of that Garth Brooks song... "Unanswered Prayers"... though I believe that God always answers your prayers... just not the answer you always want.

you probably prayed for NumNuts to come back... but God had a better plan... enjoyed reading your blog!

Thank you for sharing this story with us Vickie - I bet numbnuts (love it lol) is the one kicking himself now! Doesn't it always happen that the things in life that we think are the worst actually turn out to be a huge blessing. A lovely post, thank you! K x

Very sweet post. I love the pics, too, it really adds to it all. THe dress is gorgeous, and I love the hair, too!

Don't we all feel a little ugly duckling sometimes? I know I do, and I wonder sometimes if just getting older doesn't make you get over it.

I didn't have that moment until just this last spring. Mr. B (my boyfriend) had come up for the weekend and we were going out to dinner. I was getting dressed and he was working on fixing something on my computer. I walked in the room and he did a literal double take, and his eyes and his voice said i looked Beautiful.

Yeah... totally a moment worth waiting for!!!

Great post!!

You look beautiful Vickie! I am so glad you had your Pretty Woman moment, every girl deserves that. It's it great when you look and feel wonderful. I'm sorry about sticker face man, that sucks. But like you said Cinderella ended up coming to the ball with the right prince in the end! Plus if he could be "stolen" away, he wasn't worth having anyway! I'm sure that was small comfort at the time however. Thanks for sharing this post from the archives, it really meaningful and I liked learning more about you.

Hey there...I just saw your comment on Francesca's post and have to tell you I about peed my pants laughing so hard. Maria Shriver. That's hilarious. :) So then I had to pop over and I'm still cracking up at you putting a sticker over "numbnut's" face. Plus, you scrap...I can tell I like you already. :)

Hope you don't mind me following along. I need a good laugh to extend my longevity. Oh, and I'm in Indiana. We're practically neighbors. :)

Screw numbnuts! I am so happy that you found YOUR prince charming! As for the chick who ran off with numbnuts, they are MADE for eachother and hopefully miserable ;) You are beautiful!
